For new people in the world of emulation let us make one thing clear, frontends are not emulators. What frontends are is software that will allow you to access all your roms/games from an convenient interface and allow you to start the appropriate emulator that will run those games. The more basic frontends just privide a game browser of the roms you have and allow you to launch the emulator. More advanced ones grab data, usually, from online databases and provide you with things like screenshots and info for that specific game you are looking at. That results into a more complete experience.Depending on what you want to to you may end up using a frontend as a basic emulator launcher and that is perfectly fine if that is all you need. Other more advanced users build full arcade style cabinets that house a small computer which boots to the frontend directly, the end result is a more unified experience that is more similar to running digitally downloaded games in a game console or Steam 'big picture' mode.Selecting the frontend you want to use might be a daunting task if you are a new user which is why we suggest doing some research, seeing what features they offer and if they cover your needs.

Are you an emulator developer? If you'd like a user flair reflecting that. So at first I thought OpenEmu was going to be great.
I have LaunchBox on my Windows desktop, and it's a godsend for customization and organization. I recently downloaded OpenEmu on OS X, and.god it sucks. On Launchbox, I get to choose was emulator each 'group' (console) a set of ROMs use, and it works fine.
On OpenEmu, it appears the debs set a certain file extension for each emulator, and they will auto organize into their own groups based on that, not on where I want them. Not to mention cover art is apparently downloaded by ROM hash, not game name, so now for some reason my N64 dump of ROMs I am having to go and download art one by one because it can't match the hash, but they run and play fine.
Whereas in Launchbox, I can search up databases by name and instantly embed metadata into the my Launchbox, including from cover, back cover, manuals etc etc. So I was wondering if someone has a better fronted for OS X besides OpenEmu? I wonder if the Launchbox team is thinking of making OS X.
Install RetroArch - its newest release was a major overhaul. I am using this on my Mac Mini right now, and am not looking back for the time being. My ideal set up was to have a front end in Kodi, but this proved to be complicated in OSX, as many mac emulators didn't have as strong command line/terminal support.
The other issue was even fewer of the emulators (openemu included) did not provide a way to exit via Gamepad key combo. As of a few weeks ago, I updated retroarch and its been a dream. The new UI looks like the PS3 XMB. You can exit via Controller Combo, which brings you back to the main menu in RetroArch. The whole experience has been upgraded and I'd be happy to continue helping you if you choose to explore this. Edit: I dinked around with Steam/Big Picture Mode and ICE, but this was also tragically flawed, as the Linux and OSX versions of ICE produced some undesired results and required me to go back and fourth with the author on GitHub. I think the latest updates have addressed it - but Steam is also heavier overhead then Retroarch, and with RetroArch, you are basically getting a very optimized and clean front end for your emulators and roms, including wicked Joypad/gamepad support.
Unfortunately RetroArch for OSX does not support command line, so you cant use Steam/ICE and RetroArch with the same degree of success as you would the Linux or Windows versions. Its also known as 'Lakka', if you search Retroarch Lakka, or something to that effect, you should find more info. As a fellow OSX Emulation Enthusiast, I recommend getting familiar. I use my mac mini as a HTPC, it runs Kodi for media (tv/movies), and for games I launch RetroArch from within. This has proven to work wonderfully, as Kodi pauses when RetroArch Loads, and when I exit RetroArch with my Joypad, Kodi resumes! The whole experience has been seemless, the only downside is no PS2 (which for OSX is lacking hardcore) and Gamecube is not yet included as a core in RetroArch, so I have to launch Dolphin independently when I wanna get into some of that.
Anyways, like I said, Im open to helping out if you want to pursue something like this or have any questions.
